Overall, compared to some other marvels (Must de Cartier, yes, I'm seriously pointing at you! Obsession was my signature for 10 years straight,1989 to 1999.), Obsession wasn't harmed that much by reformulation-plague. The new one is a little greener but wait for the first 15 minutes to dissipate and the backbone of the old Obsession is still there and lasts as long and big as in sillage.Definitely an evening fragrance or winter warmth spicey fragrance. The little old ladies come into our fragrance department and drench themselves in it until it runs down their neck. I think this is one of those perfumes that can easily over do. lol, I saw a bottle of Obsession edp sitting there I sprayed some on my arm and OMG was it’s gorgeous. :) Nowadays, no perfume (apart from Arabians) is made with natural animal secretions such as civet musk, (now is civetone). I got a partial bottle of this from my Mother, and turns out it is the old formulation. This is a slight dislike that turned into a big like for me. Middle stage is nice, cinnamon and civet but the amber cinnamon caramel after a few hours is the best. I love how you can smell an aura of sweetness around the person wearing it. I may try Must de Cartier as its supposed to be similar but more decadent than this. For some reason every time I buy a bottle for myself I end up not liking it and end up selling it. If you buy vintage, probably it will be poor civet's musk (the animal had to be killed for the manufacture). When I first sprayed it, I thought I would not like it- the first sniff was a strong, powdery hit that I thought would turn into what I thought of as a "Bank of England" smell (edit: when I first wrote this review I didn't know about the conversations surrounding labeling fragrances that way). The ultimate in warm, comfort, cozy winter perfumes. I still want to try the new Obsession just out of curiosity. The problem is, I am not a fan of the initial green note upon spraying. I tested a sample of Obsession that I had and I instantly fell in love! When I was about 11 or 12--tall for my age, and able to wear my mother's tan trench coat in what was probably a hilarious display of attempted sophistication--I strolled into my local mall's department store, making a bee line towards the perfume counter. My equally awkward friend was examining CK One, which was hugely popular at the time. I was drenched in oriental for several days, trailing it like a truck hauling a huge boat through an adolescent weekend of malls, movies, and pizza joints.

Many years later I purchased a small bottle of this for a very reasonable price and upon smelling Obsession thats when I remembered that day.

EDIT: Maybe something changed in my head or I'm just applying loads of it (6-8 sprays), but now I'm getting nice longevity. There is a cloying sweet note that permeates throughout the whole thing and it throws the composition way off balance. i think it can be a good introduction into spicy perfumes. I have been wearing Obsession since the 90's and it works great with my body chemistry. I get compliments on Obsession all the time, it lasts from morning until evening, and it's very inexpensive. I bought this again a few days ago and I must say I don't understand the complaints about the reforrmulation... I think I wore it because my best friend did, and she wore it because her older sister did. Then I spent many years with NO PERFUME (the horror) and out of the blue I asked for Fantasy for Xmas. ) Fantasy snow-balled into a full on, gourmand obsession... (not always a vintage concentration, but perfumes that have been around forever and smell like a different era) After buying Youth Dew and Tabu (both of which I wrote off and regret now. Hate it, and I hate that many never got to smell the original and call this atrocity wonderful. Unbeatable in sillage and longevity for me, Obsession, I spray on my bathrobe and I can still smell it 2 weeks later, I love the scent, but if you don't...would be very trying....

I have had people stop me in malls and various other stores asking me what perfume I am wearing. They say it doesn't smell anything like that on them. the green note disappears after five minutes and the Obsession DNA is still strong and powerful, but also sweet and warm, exactly as I remember it... I became obsessed with candy, sweet, foodie, yummy gourmands. Both scents need WINTER to come alive/get sweet/smooth... This is a spicy sweet chai masala, its Christmasy and also like a hot cross bun! First time I smelled obsession was on my aunt back in 1986.

In describing this scent, pretty much all has been said.

Some find it dated, some too overwhelming or heavy, some even too manly, but for me this is warm, strong jet tender, alluring and sensual oriental, the one that can (in designers section) match with any of its competitors for the oriental throne.

I felt like I was full leathers in a saddle in the hot sun.
